Art & Cultural Transformation

 A few months ago, I was asked a question for an online interview about the power of art.  I believe that the creative process is a God-given blessing to those who participate in it and those who choose to embrace it.  Here's the answer that I gave to my friend, Bill Barnett from Creatives Connect:

What are your thoughts on the need for the arts as a tool of transformation in our culture?   

I believe that the arts have a significant role in the transformation of people individually and also as a group. True art is an expression of the soul. That tangible expression connects to the souls of others. When the heart is touched by art,  it is enriched or embittered or outraged or healed.  It depends on the content of the art that's shared.  

Quality is appreciated and absorbed far more than a poorly done product. People avoid lack-luster low-quality performances and products and are drawn to productions done with excellence and creativity. So, in order to draw the attention of the general public our artistic expressions need to be done well. Then, we have earned the right to be heard, viewed, and considered.

Probably the greatest avenue of artistic impact in our culture is seen happening through the movie industry. The high quality effects grab people's attention and consequently introduce the producer's values to a wide audience. Because people enjoy the art, the undergirding values proclaimed boldy or subtlely are also embraced by the viewer. This has changed american cultural mores over the past two decades.  I believe we have seen a cataclysmic shift in American behavior and morals and a big factor has been the emotional response to the artistic presentations that our society has absorbed. 

Art has power. The greatest motivation for change usually does not come from one's head, but from one's heart. Art from the heart can reach out to the hearts of others.
