Excellence Is A Habit
Recently, while reading the book “For the Children’s Sake” by Susan Schaeffer MaCaulay, a statement jumped off the page. “Excellence is a habit.” It’s true.
We determine what we are satisfied with. We decide how well prepared we need to be for a performance, a visit or a service. We decide how good our make-up application will be. We determine our own performance standards in most cases.
“Excellence is a habit,” and so it should be! Psalm 33:3 states, “Play skillfully!” Colossians 3:23 exhorts us: “Whatever you do, do it whole heartily, as unto the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 13:11 encourages us to “Aim for perfection!” We will never hit perfection in our clowning, but we should at least be aiming that direction! Whoever aims at nothing, always hits it! Aim for excellence!
Dr. Gordon Anderson states, “God doesn’t want you to be a humble failure for him: He doesn’t receive any glory from that. He wants you to be a humble success!”
Clowns with well-received performances are successful because of the habits they’ve acquired through planning, prayer, practice and preparation. They have learned what it takes to do it well, and have made it a pattern for future presentations.
An admirer asked a great performer, “Tell me of your greatest performance.” He replied, “I cannot; for I have not performed it yet.” This is an example of a man aiming for perfection. He has an attitude that pursues excellence.
In the parable of the talents, Jesus shows us that our Master desires for us to do our best with what he has given to us. May we perform with excellence for him, so that we may return the talents he has given to us, only multiplied!
