The Art of Clown

A number of years ago I was part of Frosty and Leon’s “Advanced Studies on the Performance Art of Clown” camp. I loved that title “The Performance Art of Clown.”
Clowning truly can be an art. It’s not automatically an art but it may become an art.
Just because a person plays with playdough does not mean he is an artistic sculptor. Because a lady can jump in the air does not mean she is a prima ballerina. And just because a person slaps on make-up and has had a few classes does not mean that he has become a clown artist.
As I spent time in prayer, I believe God spoke to my heart about “art.” Art is simply and purely the creative expression of the soul. Mark 12:30 states we love the Lord with all of our heart and soul…” and 31 says “love your neighbor as yourself…” We use artistic expression to show our love to God, and also to share our hearts and soul with others.
God loves seeing us express ourselves through art. Consider God’s request for the incredible tapestries in the Jewish temple. Think of the use of musical instruments in scripture, the angelic sculptures that were part of the ark of the covenant, the sewing for the costuming for the priests, the woodworking, and more. God enjoys art. Consider His own wonderful artistic creation in this galaxy.
So, how does clowning move to the level of “art” rather than simply “play?” To become an artist requires a long-term time investment to develop the disciplines of the artform. Artistry often is developed under the diretion of a master. Artistry only accelerates as the person becomes focused on improving small specific details to ensure a successful product.
Not all painters will become a Rembrandt. That’s alright. Not all mimes will reach the level of Marcel Marceau. Not all clowns will reach the performance caliber of Grock or Dimitri. That’s understandable, and that’s ok. Clown from your heart and present your very best. Offer the love of God from your soul to your audience. You too can bring a wonderful experience to people as you share the art of clowning.
